If you’re dispensing seeds into 96-well plates for genotyping, germination trials or seed-bank cataloguing, there are really two paths: a manual/semi-automated dispenser you operate yourself, or a fully automated system that runs the process for you. Neither is universally “better” — the right choice depends on your batch sizes, budget, and how often your seed types or plate formats change.
When a manual dispenser is the better fit
- You process dozens to a few hundred plates a week, not thousands.
- Your lab works with many different seed types or sizes (LabTIE’s Seed Dispenser is compatible with more than 120 seed types) and needs to switch between them without reconfiguring a machine.
- You want a lower upfront cost, minimal maintenance, and no dependency on specialized service contracts.
- You need single-seed dispensing for some plates and multi-seed dispensing for others, on demand.
When an automated system is the better fit
- You’re running a core facility, seed bank or biobank with continuous, very high-volume throughput (hundreds of input tubes and thousands of output wells per run).
- The same seed types and plate formats run repeatedly, so the cost of configuring an automated line is spread across a large volume.
- You have budget and space for capital equipment, plus in-house or vendor support for upkeep.
A middle path: semi-automated, modular dispensing
LabTIE’s approach sits deliberately between fully manual hand-counting and full automation: a manual pull-slider action does the dispensing, but interchangeable mesh plates mean the same physical unit adapts to 96-, 100- and 384-well formats and well over 120 seed types, without reprogramming or new tooling costs. For most university, breeding-program and mid-size seed-bank labs, this covers the throughput automated systems are built for, at a fraction of the cost and lead time.
